MAX

(posted January 11, 2010)

Max is a very sweet boy who was living outdoors for over a year, abandoned. He is approximately 3 years old, has been neutered and vaccinated, is litter trained. He is very grateful to be inside in a foster home. He gets along well with other cats and also is OK with dogs. He is still very shy, but enjoys playing with rope toys very much. Sudden noises and movements at times still scare him, he will hide under a bed. Max deserves a wonderful forever home, he is a prince of a cat. Call 779-6022

NOTE -- MAX HAS BEEN ADOPTED!! 3/2/10

Yellow Lab Mix
Please help me find my forever home!

(posted September 18, 2009)

I am Neide Barabas founder of Friends of Strays, a non-profit animal rescue group. On 9/12/09 around 11:00am, Ngin Torres and I were on our way to rescue a dog from Laureton Parkway. We were on the Belt Parkway East and spotted a Highway Patrol car flashing its lights trying to slow down the traffic. There was a stray dog (not the one we were looking for) running in the middle of the divider of the Parkway. The poor dog was disoriented. The Officer slowed down the traffic on the left lane, but, the right and middle lane traffic kept moving fast. A man tried to catch the dog, but gave up minutes later. I knew I had to do something or the dog would be killed. We parked the car ΒΌ away and started walking towards the traffic. It was the only way to slow down the traffic. People started cursing telling us to get out of the road. One driver almost ran me over. The officer also yelled and told us to get out of the road. I yelled back: NOT WITHOUT THE DOG. I bet if the dog belonged to a celebrity or someone famous people would have stopped.

I started waiving to the Officer giving him a signal to stop the traffic completely that I would try to lasso the dog. He then realized what we wanted to do and stopped the traffic or the dog and we would be killed. The poor dog was so scared and kept on moving. This went on for about 15 to 20 minutes. One driver chased the dog in my direction. I told Ngin to talk to the dog to distract him. I knew I could not fail and waited for the right time. I don't know how, but I DID IT! Once caught, the dog started wagging his tail and wet my face with kisses. It was the best kisses I got from a dog! Whoever owned (NO MORE!) the dog should NEVER be allowed to have animals. The animals deserve better!

The dog is a yellow lab mix; very friendly, but in poor shape. He is filthy, skinny; infested with fleas and ticks; limping (one of his back legs is swelling; has some hair loss; sores on his elbows, etc. It seems to me that the came from a junkyard. I am trying to get some publicity to raise money to help the dog with his medical needs and thanks Officer Lawrence Spatz for his compassion and understanding. However, I don't understand why he NEVER GOT OUT OF THE PATROL CAR OR CALLED FOR A BACK UP!?
